Hanging Out to Dry

Hanging by ropes on Hoover Dam, Nathaniel was pulling weeds at near 110 degree temperatures yesterday. The sun was reflecting off the face of the dam to intensify the heat, and he was starting to feel sick with heat exhaustion.

He had been rushing along for some time now hoping to finish this section and call it a day with the wisdom to start much earlier the next morning.  He passed up all but the quarters now for his racquetball change collection, hearing the rest of the coinage tinkling down the concrete with the debris he was yanking from the crevasses of the dam. He felt weaker by the second.

Just then he hears a tour guide directly above him explain to his group that during early construction of the dam in 1931, one worker died every other day from heat exhaustion between June 25th and July 26th.

The day was June 27th and Nathaniel could just see the kind of imagery that was being produced..."See those two guys down there? One of them will be dead by tomorrow!" He decided it was time to go home.

  1. Cool image and event comparisons! Working in that environment sounds awful. Hope Nathaniel recouperated quickly once he got off that hot wall.
